Seven random facts about the Botanical Linguist…

rock climbing1. I’ve done this a few times.

It was terrifying at first, but also great fun!

My next challenge is rally driving.

2. I’m proud to be a ‘Bird’ – one of the fabulous team of business women who write about business and life on the Birds on the Blog website: a site which also helps fund the education of twin girls in Uganda.

theatre costumes3. One of my previous jobs involved designing and making theatre costumes for local theatre groups.

I learnt how to design paper patterns and cut fabric professionally.

Beautiful fabric is still one of my favourite things.

secluded cottage4. I’ve been told that when I was about six years old and I was asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, my answer was: “A hermit”.

I don’t remember this, and have no idea if I even knew what a hermit was! I’d miss my family and friends far too much to be one – but sometimes I wonder if with all the hustle and bustle of life and new technologies today, maybe we could all do with just a little more peace and tranquility in our lives.

5. I support the Ruhanga Bicycle Repair Initiative in the village of Ruhanga in SW Uganda. This initiative was set up to help women and girls gain practical skills they can use to generate their own income.

The project has already helped by donating tools and bicycle pumps, and is now raising money to construct a permanent working station so the participants can put their skills to work.

Update September 2014 The working station is now complete, which is wonderful news!

Fundraising is now underway to build a toilet block for the girls. If you would like to help, you can click on the button below to my new fundraising page. Thank you! 🙂

There’s no such thing as too many books.

books6. I read something new every day.

And I collect books – old and new, but especially old.

Old books have many more stories to tell than just the words on their pages.

fountain pen7. I love writing. Not just putting words together – the physical act of writing with a pen, forming the words on the page with ink. Thoughts and ideas flow like ink when writing with pen and paper.

I’m in the process of writing my first novel, and I also ghostwrite blog posts and articles for other people.

That’s definitely  more than enough about me.

Now tell me about you 🙂
